What to do when you can't get the domain name you wanted

Now that the New Blogger have introduced custom domain which enable bloggers to have their own domain name, and still host their blogs with Blogger, many bloggers may be encouraged to seek after their own domain name rather than having a subdomain like myblog.blogspot.com which they do not own. However, the Internet has been around for quite some time already, and many desirable names have been already registered and not available. What can a blogger who want a domain name but can't get the domain name he desired?

Well, he can try his luck at Buy Premium Domain. It may not be difficult for you to find the domain name you want because Buy Premium Domain has over 800,000 domain names listed with them. At Buy Premium Domain, you can search for domain by entering keywords into their search box, or you can search by popular domain categories.

Buy Premium Domain not only enable you to search for and buy the domain name you desired, but if you are creative and good at thinking up of likely domain names that will be in demand, you can also register a domain and put up the domain for sale through BuyDomain.com. You may make for yourself a tidy sum that way.

Want your own domain name rather than having a sub-domain?

If you start a blog with Blogger with its default choices, you will end up with a subdomain with an URL like yourblog.blogspot.com. This subdomain is not your property, but a property of Blogger, and Blogger can do whatever they want to do with it, including deleting it if they so choose. Further, some have the opinion that using a sub-domain is like using a home address for a business - it will command less respect. If you are of the same opinion, you can register your own domain name and there will be 2 options for you.

Custom Domain and host it with Blogger

If you host it with Blogger, you will not need to pay for hosting fees, but you will not be able to upload non-image files nor have the option of FTP access to your blog content.

Custom Domain and host your blog with a third party webhost

With this option, you will be able to upload non-image files and have FTP access to your blog content. However, it will mean that you will have to pay monthly or yearly hosting fees, and at the moment, you will not be able to use the New Blogger template with its new features.

One of the web hosting company you can host your blog with is Fusepoint, a Canadian web hosting company with offices and data centres in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City. With Fusepoint, you will get better support than the slow and hard to get support from Blogger Support. Fusepoint claims, among other things 24/7 Real Time Customer Care.

So if Blogger Support slow or almost non-existent customer support is bugging you, you can probably get better service from Fusepoint.

Free pixels advertisement for Blogger for Dummies

There is a site offering both free and paid image ads for blogs which I might as well try before the page runs out. Only thing is, free image ads are limited to 60x20 pixels. So I am forced to reduced the title of this blog to just "Dummies". I also used the free button generator. In return for the use of both these free services, I am putting image links to their sites. You can find them below:

How to migrate from an old classic Blogger template to the New Blogger template

We get frequent complaints about bloggers not being able to see the Blogger Layout. If you have migrated from an old Blogger account to the New Blogger (formerly Beta) account, your blogs will still be using the old classic template. To check whether your blog is using the old classic template or the New Blogger template, refer to Old classic Blogger template or New Blogger template?.

If you are still using the old classic Blogger template, and will like to migrate the blog to use the New Blogger template so that you can use the Layout to customize your blog easily, this is the way to do it. In the Dashboard, click TEMPLATE, then under the TEMPLATE tab, click the CUSTOMIZE DESIGN sub-tab, then click UPGRADE YOUR TEMPLATE. Select a suitable template, then click SAVE at the top of the page.

Even if you don't intend to use the standard Blogger templates, but use a modified New Blogger template like 3 column template for New Blogger (formerly Blogger Beta) or 3 column templates for New Blogger modified by Charlemagne Stavanger, you should still first upgrade to a standard New Blogger template, then use the instructions in Backing up and changing New Blogger template.

Bloggers aren't stuck to their computers 24/7. They have a life to live. They have people to keep in touch with. It is good to have a mobile phone to stay in touch. But there are so many mobile phone providers. Which one to choose?

New Blogger: How to remove the text Title

IMPORTANT NOTE: This post gives instructions on how to remove the blog title, but also gives reasons why you should not to it after the instructions. I hope you read the rest of the post first before you remove the blog title. Also, whenever you edit the template, it is always wise to backup the current template PLUS whatever Page Elements that can be backed up. See How to backup and edit template and backup Page Elements.

Some people have followed the method outlined in this post Adding graphic to your New Blogger blog header.

However, some have incorporated the post title as a graphic title in the graphic they want to use for their blog header, and they want to remove the text title. To do this, you have to look for this block of codes in the template:

<div id='header-wrapper'>
<b:section class='header' id='header' maxwidgets='' showaddelement='yes'>
<b:widget id='Header1' locked='true' title='Blogger Tips and Tricks (Header)' type='Header'/>

look for this in the code: locked='true'. Change it to locked='false' and save the template.

Then go to the Layout and click EDIT in the page element for the text Title, and you will be able to see "Remove Page Element". Click that and the text title will be deleted.

However, if you like your blog to be found by others through search engines, my opinion is, it is best to leave the text Title alone as the text Title (and the description) counts high in how the search engines figure out what your blog is about, and can help direct people seeking the kind of information you have in your blog find your blog. My opinion is, it is probably better to reduce the text size of the text Title to 1 pixel, or to retain the text Title but put the image as background as explained in this post: Adding graphic background to your New Blogger blog header

How to reduce text Title to 1 pixel

Update: read the updates below for better solutions. I am not sure how search engine view the trick of reducing the text title to 1 pixel

To reduce the text Title to 1 pixel so that it is practically not visible, look for this block of codes in the CSS (Cascading Style Sheet):

#header h1 {
margin:5px 5px 0;
padding:15px 20px .25em;
line-height:1.2em;
text-transform:uppercase;
letter-spacing:.2em;
font: $pagetitlefont;
}

Add to it this line font-size: 1px; so that the codes become

#header h1 {
margin:5px 5px 0;
padding:15px 20px .25em;
line-height:1.2em;
text-transform:uppercase;
letter-spacing:.2em;
font: $pagetitlefont;
font-size: 1px;
}

Note: Never try to make the text Title the same color as the background as this is consider black hat SEO (Search Engine Optimization) any your blog will be blacked for that. I do not know whether reducing the text to 1 pixel to make it practically invisible is also considered black hat SEO, so I personally will prefer to leave the text Title alone, add an image as background and make the text a contrasting color as described in Adding graphic background to your New Blogger blog header

Update 5 April 2007: I hit upon a better idea. I made a image Header with the graphic title of the blog incorporated into the image, then used the text title as the description in this blog Anything Chinese. The text "description you see below the image Header "Chinese Food and Recipe, Chinese culture and custom, Chinese business, etc." is actually the text title of the blog, but with font size reduced so that it appear as if it is the blog description.

The technique to do this is described in this post: Special fonts for your clickable blog graphic header without removing the text title.

Testing a hyperlink for my blog reader

Someone commented that when using the target="_blank" attribute with a blogspot site in Blogger, the window does not open in a new window. That is a suprise to me. I am a retired scientist, and I like to experiment, so I am going to make a hyperlink to the post where my blog reader made that comment: How to make a clickable link

The HTML I used to make the above hyperlink is in the scroll box below:

<a href="http://bloggerfordummies.blogspot.com/2006/03/how-to-make-clickable-link.html" target="_blank">How to make a clickable link</a>

Now I am going to publish it, click on the hyperlink and see if it opens in a new window (the target site is a blogspot.com site).

RESULT: The hyperlink does open in a new window. Try it for yourself. If it does not open in a new window for you, please describe it in the comments section and I will try to see why.
