Why I change the header

Note: I noticed that people searching for "changing header in blogspot.com" have landed in this page. For these people, to change the Header (title) of the blog, you have to sign into the Dashboard, choose the blog, then click the SETTINGS > BASIC tabs, and there you can change the header (title) of the blog. If you are referring to changing the header with a graphic, check the posts
How do I post a photo on my blog title (old Blogger)
Adding a graphic to your blog Header (new Blogger)

Darren over at Problogger.net is having a group writing project where bloggers submit what they would do differently if they were to start their blog all over again. The original header for this blog is actually Blogger for Dummies. This project sounds like a good excuse to explain to readers why I need to change the header.

This is a sticky post and will always be the first post when you land on the main page. If ever there are new posts, it will be after this post. There also will be instructions on how to find new articles

If I am to start the blog again, I would not have put Blogger for Dummies as its header. Apparently, FOR DUMMIES® is a registered trademark of Wiley Publishing, Inc. I did not know this when I started the blog, but was alerted to it by Rose DesRochers a few months later. To avoid future problems, I changed the header to Blogger Help. (Update August 14, 2006: Changed the title again to Dummies Guide to Google Blogger. There is no "For Dummies" in the header, therefore no infringement of the trademark) However, the site already have inbound links, is being found by search engines and readers have found the posts useful. Thus I have kept the site andURLl intact as I don't think it involves violation of the trademark, and started a new blog at Blogger Tips and Tricks just in case. To try to integrate the two sites I have created categories and have incorporated tagged posts from Blogger Tips and Tricks into the categories on this blog. If ever there are new posts, they will be below this post in the main page. You can still find new posts by checking the Categories on the sidebar, and also search for topics in the Google sitesearch box by ticking the radio buttons against blogger-tricks.blogspot.com or testing-blogger-beta.com

I would also have used the URL http://blogger-for-dummies@blogspot.com rather than http://bloggerfordummies.blogspot.com. This is because search engines cannotdistinguish between combined words. You may unintentionally end up with domain names that convey other impressions than the one you intended. Look at the funny results, for example, in this article: The top 10 unintentionally worst company URLs (close new window to get back to this page).

I have read the posts on Darren's group writing project and have noticed a few bloggers mentioning they would not have started with Blogger and would have preferred Wordpress instead. However, I have a different experience with Blogger. There have been complaints about Blogger support being slow to respond. However, just recently, I contacted Blogger support to ask them to remove the post word verification, and it was done within 24 hours. I think I will stick with Blogger.

Update 20 November 2007: I have been meaning to write an online book for Blogger bloggers and have registered a subdomain http://dummies-guide-to-google-blogger.blogspot.com for the purpose. Didn't do anything about it as I was waiting for Blogger beta to stabilise. Now that Blogger Beta is almost complete, and I got a query from a reader of my blogs, I though I might as well start it off by answering her with a post in that blog. I have since answered 2 other question in that blog. Do have a look at my new blog Dummies Guide to Google Blogger.

Now this blog and the new blog share the same title. I will have to change the title of this blog again. Anyone has any suggestion? I think I will change the Header to "Dummies Guide to Blogger Classic"

Note: This blog is in no way connected to Wiley Publishing, Inc., the "for Dummies" trademark owner. (This disclaimer is added because of a tip from ianfusa whose site is AdWords for Profit (close new window to get back to this page).

  1. I had considered migrating about a year ago because of categories, but am really happy with Blogger/Blogspot and have had very few problems.

Anyway, I live in Barcelona, Spain, where we get somewhat fatalistic anyway and asume it's normal for the underground system to have whole "holes" every summer, with at least 10 stations inoperative due to mainteinance. Or that the trains and plains shall ALWAYS strike between July 30th and August 2nd -the usual dates for people tio flee away on holidays. So, why not accept Blogger as it is?

  3. Hi Peter,
I'm sure this is a really dumb question, but well, I have to ask- how do you get multiple blogs - say you have 3 - to all show up in your Blogger profile under "Blogs"?

    Thanks,

  4. Just log in using the same user name and create the 3 blogs.

Got a question: I want to put a picture where my blogname appears, it looks boring at the top, how do I do that, and....instead of 'comments' at the bottom of my post, how can I change that to someting else eg: 'have your say'?
    Thanks.

  8. I have come across problems like this before and I find sometimes changing browser helped. If you are still using only Internet Explorer, it is time to get Firefox. To read more about why you should get Firefox, and also to download and install Firefox, go to What to do when you can't post photos, etc.

  9. Hi Peter,

Thanks for your response. The funny thing is, later the same evening the blogpost did show up! I didn't do anything new to make that happen, but it just showed up automatically the next time I checked it.

I'm glad that I found your blogger help site...I could really use it for many more questions that I have about Blogger! I've been working from a mostly trial and error method and sometimes that can be frustrating...

Thanks again for your prompt response!

I have a similar problem, and must change the name and URL of my blogger blog.

Can you think of any way to copy the old content to the new URL in order to maintain continuity or must I just restart from today forward?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hi Larry,

If you want to change the url, all you have to do is to go to SETTINGS > PUBLISHING and change the url there. Everything will remain the same. Your posts will be retained. Only the url will be changed.

I am however, retaining the url as I don't think that infringe the trademark as it is a single word "bloggerfordummis.blogspot.com and not "For Dummies"

  14. Hey Peter,

Do you plan to change to Blogger Beta? I'm still a bit adamant because it says, you can't convert back to the old one when you do.

I've tried making a pseudo-blog with the Beta and the features are nice, I however doesn't allow the customization of the template with HTML... yet. Do you know when they'll be able to allow HTML customization... and if I do convert will my old layout remain unchanged?

    Thanks!

  15. Hi Alternati,

From your comment, I am assuming you have been invited to migratge to Blogger Beta. In my opinion, I think it is best to be patient and wait as I read a lot of problems with bugs, etc. Wait until they have iron out most of the bugs.

In the meantime, I have used a different gmail account to start a test Blogger Beta blog. You can see it at Testing Blogger Beta. So far, I am quite happy with the features, but because I did not do it via the path of migration from the old blogs I have avoided most of the problems that people have complained about.

Thanks for the info. I'll be patient then. :)

  20. Hi Alterni,

Edit HTML (Blogger Beta with the layout) is now (has been for some time) available. You can also go back to the classic template if you have migrated your old blogs, although I think that is an unwise move at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi Alterni,

Sorry, misread your comment. I think you are wise to wait. I got no choice but to wait as I have not been invited to join the Beta program. But I have gone to Blogger Beta and registered for a test Beta blog using a gmail unassociated with my currrent blogs. And I am enjoying myself. The features are great, and for me, the bugs are few. Maybe it is because I didn't migrate but started anew. You should try it.

I looked over your blog and read a few of your posts, but was surprised not to find what i was looking for, because i know lots of people have inqured about it on blogger help group but i havent found any definate answer there either.

So could you please do me a great favour and make an article on how to make an image take the place of the background of a standard Minima template blog? So everything on the blog comes on top of the picture when you visit the site.
I would really apprciate your help, my email is if you want to email me instead; metanoia1234@yahoo.co.uk

Also another thing i cant seem to find out is how to add music to the background template of my blog, so that it is imbedded with the template of the site. But if not one of these favours is more than enough for now thanks

that was brilliant, thanks alot for the help. Although i have a question about it, how do i get a small picture to stretch over the whole page? is there a piece of code i can insert? I know it works with big pictures because i tried one and it fit the whole screen

And do you have an article about how to get music embedded into the template so that it plays as soon as you enter the site?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I design with both Blogger and Wordpress templates. Blogger wins hands up when it comes to full customization. Wordpress is great if you just want what you see.

I have a suggestion on your blogger headline problems. Get your own domain name and upload your files there. On your existing blog, leave a message that your blog has moved to your new domain name. It will migrate all your files to your domain account.

As to adding an image on your header, I can write the code for that. But each blogger template is designer specific so I need to see your site first.

  27. Thanks for your comment and suggestion which I think is good. However, I am not that serious about all that stuff, I don't like the idea of having to renew my hosting fees every year, and so far, I have been quite happy having my blogs hosted by Blogger. I have been planning to make an extra post telling people about my new site Blogger Tips and Tricks and telling them how to navigate the site and how to find new stuff (using the Categories and the Google sitesearh box, for example. I do include posts in my new blog in this blog's categories except that I haven't have the time to add the other new posts into the categories yet. The key is the time constraint). Anyway, you comment is helpful and I believe it would also help other people who read your comment, so I would like to thank you again.

  30. Hi Adrian,

From your comment, you probably have been invited to migrate your classic blogs to Blogger Beta. Fortunately or unfortunately, I have not been invited, and I have instead started some test beta blogs like Testing Blogger Beta. I have no experience with classic blogs with migrated to Blogger Beta.

I have added AdSense to my beta blogs and it is much easier than with the classic blogs. See Blogger Beta: Adding advertisements, hit counters, etc. and to remove that will be easy. Just go to layout. There will be some page elements that says "HTML/JavaScrip". I would just click EDIT, then in the pop-up, just click Remove Page Element, then click Save Changes, and it is done. I don't know if when you migrate from Blogger classic, the Page Element for the Adsense ads that you have in the previous classic blogs will appear in the layout. If so, all you have to do is to follow the above instruction. If not, you should click the TEMPLATE tab, then click Edit Template, tick the box beside "Expand Widget template" and see if you can spot anything like the script for Adsense. I have tried for the ads I have added via the Layout and couldn't find it.

Well, maybe if you try the above and failed, you will have no choice but to revert back to your classic template (see Reverting from Blogger Beta to Blogger classic), backup your template first (see Backing up template, changing template, etc., remove the scripts from the template, review, if satisfied, save. Backup the new template again. Then if you want, revert back to the Blogger Beta template, and hopefully, whatever customization you may have in you classic template will still be there. If not, then I HOPE the backup classic template can help you back to where you want.

How to post a "sticky post"? I understand that you have used a future date of December 31, 2007, so that it remains the latest date which means this post will be the first post always, as the subsequent posts will on the real dates (and not the future dates). But, my question is how do insert a post with a future date and then revert back to normal date for subsequent posts?

Is there any other way to show a particular post as the first post always?

  34. After you post the "sticky post" by post-dating, all your subsequent post will use the current (normal) date without you having to do this, and therefore will remain below the "sticky post".

Regarding other ways, yes, there is another way, and that is with Blogger Beta (now New Blogger as Blogger Employee and Blogger Buzz has said the Blogger Beta is out of beta now, though I don't agree). See post How to add AdSense, "sticky post", etc. to the top of your main column

I'm soo happy and jumping up, up, up and away. I had this problem long ago. No one can give me a satisfactory answer in Blogger Help Group. BloggerTalk.net either.

I should have asked you first. Thank you again. Anytime you're in Kuala Kangsar, give me a call. My treat.

I've another problem. Not a problem really. I wanna use a three column template just like yours. The thing is, I'm not as computer savvy as you like to think. How do I upload Thur's three column?

I've tested it and I found it suited me. This is how I do it. I opened up my classic (current) template and deleted it. Then copied and pasted Thur's 3-column. Then I filled in whatever I wanted and it's working nicely.

How do blog descriptions, archives, profiles appeared like usual? Do I have to do it manually?

P/s: Gonna post about you in my next post. Hope you don't mind. I'm asking because I too ran in trouble like you. Some people have copyright for everything!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi Noor Azman,

Glad you found a solution to your problem, although I don't know what that problem is. Has it something to do with trademark?

Regarding Thur's 3 column template, I would suggest 2 things:
    1. Install statcounter if you have not done so already. Check system statistics to see how many of your visitors are using the 800x600 screen resolution (small screen). If they still represent a significant percentage (for me it was 5-20%), you may want to check how your blog looks to them. When I first installed Thur's template, I was jumping up and down like you, that is, until someone gave me a tip - put javascript:top.resizeTo(800,600) in the address bar and press the ENTER key to resize the screen window. What I saw, I didn't like. The main column was squeezed into a narrow column. (works for FireFox and Internet Explorer 6, but not IE7).

I then resize the width of the sidebar, and only then was I satisfied. Check out this post: Blogger (classic) template tutorial - 3 column template.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Sheesh, should scold myself. Found your original comment Noor Azman. And saw that one of your blog has fonts in black, so I assume your problem about red fonts have been solved.

Regarding installing Thur's template, you seem to have already answered your own question, so I supposed thatr is not a problem for you anymore.

Regarding putting in the description, it would be like any normal standard Blogger template. You sign into Dashboard, select the blog, click SETTINGS > BASIC and there in the appropriate field (Title or Description) type in whatever you fancy, then save.

    Peter a.k.a. Enviroman
    Enviroman Says

    ReplyDelete
  49. No, no. It's not about trademark. It's about other people's articles. When I first started blogging, I used articles from EzineArticle.com or other WebSites. Some of the authors are very fussy. Some of them wanted their resource box to be placed in the exact position they wanted. That's why I asked permission first before I do anything.

A question, beside blogger template, where else can I do 'test drive' Thur's 3-Column or any other 3-Column for that matter?

Another question (sorry), are you from Taiping?

That's all for now. Nice talking to you. Next time I gonna use the e-mail.

Thanks for everything. You make my day today!

  50. You can test drive Thur's template or any other template by creating a blog. If you want to test drive Thur's template, which is old classic template, just revert back to classic template before you put Thur's template in.

  69. Hi Extreem investor admin,

There are some important thing you didn't mention - whether yours is the old classic account or the New Blogger account and also if you are using an old classic Blogger template or the New Blogger template. To distinquish between them, refer to
Old classic Blogger account or New Blogger account
    and
Old classic Blogger template or New Blogger template.

If you are still with the old classic accoount, refer to this post for instruction to migrate to the New Blogger account:
Migrating to the New Blogger account: How to cut the queue

If you are already having a New Blogger account with the old classic template, refer to this post on how to migrate to the New Blogger template:
How to migrate from old classic template to the New Blogger template.

Assuming you are having the New Blogger template, then you can use various 3 column templates like
Ramani's 3 column Minima template which I use for all my main blogs except this one. You can also use other templates: refer to this post:
New Blogger 3 column templates modified by Charlemagne Stavanger.

If you want to use a template exactly like this blog, which is using old classic template, refer to Old classic 3 column Minima template modified by Thur and further modified by Peter Chen

If you are already using a New Blogger template, to use the above template, you will first have to revert back to the old classic template. For instruction, refer to Reverting from New Blogger template to old classic template.

  70. Hi Extreme investor admin,

In answer to your second comment, there are similar templates, but with the 2 sidbars to the left which you can find in this post:
New Blogger templates for posting large photos.

I think having sidebars to the left for the Google AdSense ads are better as most people read from left to right.

  71. Thanks Peter,

Your help was more that exactly what I needed and it helped me solve my initial problem.

    Thanks so much.

Now I have configured my blog on the new blogger account with a beta blog "Rounders 2" but comments I get about my posts are not visible like the rest of the postings!!

    This is quite frustrating!!

  72. Hi Extreem investor admin,

Refer to Changing the settings. Look in particular for the section for comments and make sure the setting is set for comment to display in all new post. By right, it should be set to display by default, but lately there have been lots of complaints in the Google Blogger Help group of being unable to see the comments. I myself have one post setting to not display comment by itself. I didn't do it, and I had to set it back (by clicking on the Post Options at the bottom left of the post editor.

  73. Hi Peter.

I'm glad I found your blog. I have lots to learn about Blogger and it looks like this will be lots more useful than my current source of help, the Blogger Help group on Google.

I read with interest about your name change for this blog.

If you don't mind, can I offer you a small piece of advice? In correct English, your title should be Dummies' Guide to Blogger (note the apostrophe after Dummies - technically you need this in order for it to make sense.)

  74. Hi Clive,

Thanks for correcting my English. My excuse: I am a none-native English speaker. Very much appreciated. I appreciate correction. Note that I have edited the title of this blog as well as Dummies' Guide to Google Blogger

  75. Peter - Glad it was useful. There are plenty of native English speakers who would get this wrong!

  76. I have been looking over your blog and it is very helpful.

I have not seen a post on what I am looking to do.

I write long, very long posts and I would like my blog to only show 15-20 lines of and then either have a scroll window for viewing the rest of the blog, or just force you to open it in a new window.

I noticed on your post "New Blogger Template for posting large photos," you put some information in a frame, but I would want an esthetically pleasing looking scroll bar as well if I looked at that option.

    My blog is http://makingsenseofmyworld.blogspot.com/.

Part of it has been mirrored here, http://makingsenseofmyworld.blog.infomine.com/ and that is more of how I would like my blog to look.

  77. Hi Deborah,

I don't see any scrollbox in the first link, and I only saw a [read more] in the second link. If you want to do expandable post summary [read more], refer to Expandable post summary for New Blogger.

For scrollbox, refer to Scrollbox for your blog.

  80. Hi Sophy,

    Which blog?
    http://bloggerfordummies.blogspot.com or
    http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com

The first one (this blog) is using the old classic template. If you are still interested in the template, refer to
Blogger for Dummies is now 3 column.
You will find a link to where you can get the template. However, I don't like it because I still have visitors who uses small screen and for them, I feel the template as original is not so good. However I have modified the template and if you want to read about how to modify it, refer to
Blogger template tutorial: 3 column template.

If you still have problem, comment again or email me. There is a email me link in the blog

  82. Hi Sophy,

I am retired and housebound. I don't use handphone and wouldn't know the reason why ads for your blog wouldn't display. BTW I would like to know how you manage to view blogs on a small handphone screen, including the image.

Regarding whether your site is index, just put
    site:electronics-4-you.blogspot.com
into the search box. If you get a result, your site have been indexed.

  83. You changed your page style?
I am not comfortable surfing your blog. It looks complicated

    ReplyDelete
  84. I too had to change around the information on my blog as well. I was known as "The Adsense Consultant" and while being named that isn't a violation it is against the terms of service to have the word "adsense" on your site's url - so I had to change it around.

I consider this a very valuable learning experience!
