How you can help Blogger Tips and Tricks

First, whatever follows are completely voluntary and no one should feel obliged to take up any suggestion.

A reader asked how to get smiley face for his blog and I did a post Free Smiley Face for your blog. The animated graphic for that post was obtained from a site but they said their graphics are free to use, but a link back to their site will be greatly appreciated, which I have duly done. I thought I would follow their example and indicate that I will appreciate a link or links to my site, but on a completely VOLUNTARY basis with no obligations.

Many bloggers have got helpful information from my blogs, especially Blogger Tips and Tricks plus help via questions in the comments and via emails. While I am happy to help out, like any other bloggers, I will like to have more inbound links from other sites and to have more traffic, so I thought I would follow what the site that provided free graphics did, which is to asked to be linked to on a completely VOLUNTARY basis (no obligation). There are many ways you can do it, and I will outline some of them to you below and try to make it easy for you. It may help you get to my site or sites faster and it may help your visitors find the information and help they need.

In fact one reader made a banner for me and used that to link to my site from his without me asking, and I am really grateful for that. You can see what he did below. Try hovering your mouse over the banner and/or clicking on it:

blogger resources, help for bloggers using Google Blogger platform

If you like to put that in your post or sidebar, etc, all you have to do is to copy and paste the HTML in the scroll box below either directly into a post, or via a HTML/Javascript Page Element in the LAYOUT.

<a href="http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com/" target="new"><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jizoPL28qCY/Rp8UuG48MuI/AAAAAAAAAYQ/BaK8uEAPJic/s1600/Peter%2BChen%27s%2BBlogger%2BTips%2B%26%2BTricks.jpg" alt="blogger resources, help for bloggers using Google Blogger platform" title="Get great information and help here by clicking on banner"></a>

If the banner does not fit into your sidebar, all you need to do is to first find the width of the sidebar (refer to How to find the width of your blog Header, main column (posts), sidebar. And if you want the banner to fit into the sidebar, all you need to do is to resize the displayed banner by adding the attribute width="W" into the <img tag. You don't need the height="H" attribute as the banner will automatically keep the aspect ratio constant. For example, <img src="button URL" width="100">.

Update: I have found the kindly soul, Peter 2, who created the button for me without asking and have put the button in his blog as a link to mine. His blog is St. Vincent's Hospital Darlinghurst - Male Nurse. The clickable button is currently fifth from the bottom of the left sidebar. Thanks, Peter 2.

Another way is to just add a simple text link using the Link List (see Add Link List to New Blogger sidebar, either among your other links or in a separate Link List with the title "Blogger Resources" or something.

You may also chose to include a single text link by using the HTML

<a href="http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com" target="new">Blogger Tips and Tricks</a>

Alternatively, you can use a HTML/Javascript to add the "blogroll" by pasting part or all of the following HTML:

<h2 class="sidebar-title">Blogger Resources</h2>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Blogger Tips and Tricks</a></li>

  1. I want to change my mouse pointer in my blog. My goal is to have a peace sign for a cursor in my political blog and something else for my other blog. Is this possible?

  2. Hi Susan,

You will have to google for free or paid unconventional cursors, load them into your computer, then refer to Change Mouse Cursor.

  5. I despair of reaching you - this entry was dated last July. I am rather new at the blog thing and at computers, and do not understand the thing of adding a webring thing or the map counter thing - it tells me to "paste html on your page" This tells me absolutely nothing. I can copy and paste what they sent me, but have no idea where to put it.

  8. Hi Possibilities, etc.,

Sorry for this late response, but got no email notifications for moderation for 3 comments including yours. Only found them in the Dashboard.

    "webring thing"

If it is the same webring I previously used, I have given up on that and have forgotten what was involved, only thing I remember that webring is not too user friendly. Also, when I used it, we were still using the old classic Blogger template. I have not keep track and I do not know if you will have to add it direct to the New Blogger template (assuming you are using New Blogger template) or indirectly via a HTML/Javascript Page Element in the LAYOT. Afraid I cannot be of much help here unless I take time off to go reinstall back the "webring thing" back of which I have no wish nor the time.

    "map counter thing"

I am afraid again I have to plea ignorance of what this "map counter thing" and without knowing what it is, I also cannot help.

"it tells me to "paste html on your page"

This will depend on what application you are trying to add. Most (for those using New Blogger template) can be simply added by using the HTML/Javascript Page Element, some rare ones have to be added direct to the template. I am not clear what you are trying to add, so have no suggestion to offer except perhaps refer you to:

    Dummies Guide to Google Blogger
"online book" in progress. Use the CONTENT at the top of the main column

which I had planned to be a step-by-step guide for those very new. However, I don't have the luxury of time, but there are still enough material there to help those new to Blogger quickly get familiar.

That is about all I can do.

  10. ThatOtherSharon,

How many Sharons are there around?

And yes, I too thank you from the bottomost of my heart. Now normally bottom is negative, but definitely not in this case and in case anyone misunderstoodd the two of us, the bottomest part of someone's heart is the best part of a person's heart to be, and that means I beat ThatOtherSharon to it. Really, from my heart, my mind and my soul. Can anyone beat that? Thanks.

  12. Hello.
I raelize this is an old post but here's hoping you see my comment.

I am having a hard time uploading this gif
    (file:///C:/??????.gif)
    to photobucket.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers.
    Shannon

  13. Hi Shannon,

The first thing you need to know is not to put long unbroken lines in posts or comments and doing that causes problems. I have to edit your comment and shorten the link to a file in your computer.

I have not been using Photobucket for quite some time already, but from what I can remember, it should not be too difficult. I think there should be a "browse" button or something to that effect. If so, you just click "browse" and locate that file in your computer and then click upload (all from memory).

The only thing you need to know is whether you can upload .gif files to Photobucket. Check the Help files in Photobucket.

Now I think you can upload .gif, even animated .gif images to Photobucket as I remembered having done that. See Testing upload animated gif images to Photobucket.

Hope you have no problem. Will like to hear about your progress and hope you will let us know if your uploading of gif images to Photobucket met with any success.

  15. Please, excuse my english. I want all the names of the articles on my blog to appear in the column at the side. I can´t do it.
I am only able to get the names of the articles of the first month or of the last month. Please let me know what can I do. Thanks

  16. Hi Pedro Morales,

I am afraid that is how Blogger works. If you want to display all the articles, you will have to do it yourself manually by adding a link list

  18. Hi Marcey,

Are you referring to a link list? Is so, sorry there is no way you can get it back and you will need to redo it. If it is a link list (blogroll) then I suggest you use a HTML/Javascript Page Element (gadget) instead and use a list of HTML hyperlink tag instead.

  19. Susan the Dork: I would be vary careful about loading free cursors. Sites that offer them can load malware without you even clicking anything.
BE CAREFUL! I would not download any free cursors. (I might be being too cautious, but better safe...)
