How to migrate from an old classic Blogger template to the New Blogger template

We get frequent complaints about bloggers not being able to see the Blogger Layout. If you have migrated from an old Blogger account to the New Blogger (formerly Beta) account, your blogs will still be using the old classic template. To check whether your blog is using the old classic template or the New Blogger template, refer to Old classic Blogger template or New Blogger template?.

If you are still using the old classic Blogger template, and will like to migrate the blog to use the New Blogger template so that you can use the Layout to customize your blog easily, this is the way to do it. In the Dashboard, click TEMPLATE, then under the TEMPLATE tab, click the CUSTOMIZE DESIGN sub-tab, then click UPGRADE YOUR TEMPLATE. Select a suitable template, then click SAVE at the top of the page.

Even if you don't intend to use the standard Blogger templates, but use a modified New Blogger template like 3 column template for New Blogger (formerly Blogger Beta) or 3 column templates for New Blogger modified by Charlemagne Stavanger, you should still first upgrade to a standard New Blogger template, then use the instructions in Backing up and changing New Blogger template.

  1. Peter,
On one of my blogs I tried changing to 3 column minima template but was given an error message something about being parsed. So I went and changed to one of the standard Minima in Blogger (2 column), in the meantime. What could have gone wrong; I followed your directions. I would still like to have the 3 column, if possible. And then fix up my blog. Please help.
    Thanks.

  2. I need more information. Are you using the old classic template or the New Blogger template, and which of my post did you use to try to change to 3 column.

  3. Peter,
Here is the actual error message when I tried to change from my 2 column (classic)template to the 3 column Minima template by Stavanger. Note that I am on New Blogger (relatively new since January 07). Perhaps you can tell me what I did wrong. Again, thank you for your continued attention and patience.

“We were unable to save your template
Please correct the error below, and submit your template again.
Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.
XML error message: Content is not allowed in prolog.”

  4. Hi Rapsodia,

I have tested it and found that what you say is true. The template cannot be previewed or saved. I have uploaded the backup template for this blog DIY Articles to Google Photostore group. Join that group, look for a file named "Stavanger's 3 col Minima template.xml, right-click on it and select "Save link as..:" and save it to your computer. Then upload it to your blog. I am updating the post New Blogger 3 column templates modified by Stavanger. If you have any problem, read that post again.

  5. I don't want to change to the new templates (i find the old sistem easier to work with), but I would apreciate if you know of any solution for this problem: "If you use a classic template, the labels pages will only display the last 20 posts for each label, with no link to view older posts. If you switch to a Layouts template, you will automatically get "older posts" links to go back through each set of labels." @ Known Issues for the New Blogger. They haven't updated since January 19!

    Thanks

  13. Sorry Blogger has stopped support for the old classic template and FTP. Says too expensive to continue support. Anyway when we were first told about Blogger Beta the precursor of new xml Blogger, many were apprehensive because of numerous teething problems but so far all who made the switch never regret including me. We now have more choices
