How to make a blog directory for your blog

UPDATE: April 23, 2012: Looks like Blog Explosion is kaput. All the links to them is no "503 Service Unavailable". Got to disable all the links.

Here is an easy way to add a blog directory to your blog and add your blog to MyBlogDirectory (and increase traffic to your blog at the same time). Click on My Blog Directory (this has been made a hyperlink for your convenience). This will take you to My Blog Directory. At the bottom of the page, click "ADD YOUR BLOG" and follow instruction. I will explain how this will increase traffic to your blog later.

Everyone needs lots of content on their blog to keep the attention of people that visit, so why not add a blog directory? Adding a Blog Directory to your blog means more sticky content on your blog which attracts repeat readership. People who read your blog directory may want to add their blog to your directory. When they do so, it uses your BlogExplosion referral url and you are credited for the sign-up (to make a blog directory for your blog, you will have to sign up for BlogExplosion (free) I have used various blog exchanges and of all of them BlogExplosion is the best). This means more BlogExplosion referral traffic to you! Your blog will appear in mine, in other's directory as well as BlogExplosion's directory, so you will be getting more incoming links to your blog. There is also a link at the top of your customized blog directory that means people can get back to your blog easily. How to get Blogger to host your profile photo

This post have been updated. Have a look at the improved post: Getting Blogger to host your photo for the profile, header, etc.


If you want to have a photo for your blogspot profile, you will have to host your photo on the web with a photo hosting service like photobucket . This will involve registering for an account. If you register for a free account, you have to log into photobucket at least once every three months, otherwise the account will be deleted. Even if you register for a paid account, you will have to keep your subscription. This is a work around to get your profile photo hosted by Blogger. Upload the photo into an empty post specially created for this purpose. If you don't want to have the post in your current blog, you can always create a special blog for this purpose, or post it to the current blog and resave it as draft after you have obtained the url for the photo. After you have posted the photo, go to that post on the web and click on the photo. This will take you to the page on the web where the photo is hosted. Copy the url from the address bar. Sign into Dashboard, click the EDIT PROFILE button on the top right hand of the page. Scroll down and look for the place to enter your photo url (see screenshot above). Paste it there and you are done. This idea came from Taz Kwok.

Update 27 March 2007: Things have changed with the introduction of New Blogger. Now if you delete the photo, it will be gone from the Web. Also, if you click on the picture to the page displaying only the photo, you can't use the URL in the address bar of that page as before. You will have to click VIEW in the menu bar, then select PAGE SOURCE to get the source code. You will have to search for the real URL of the photo from the source code. How to make a post remain at the top of the page.

Posts are sequenced chronologically, with newer posts appearing at the top. If you want a particular post to be always at the top (sticky post), you will have to play with the dates. When you create that sticky post, at the bottom, click POST AND COMMENT OPTIONS, then predate your post to the latest possible, as shown in the screenshot above.

How to change order of the posts


The posts in Blogger are ordered in chronological order. So if you want to change the order of the posts, you will have to change the dates and/or time of the posts. In the Create or Edit posts mode, click the "Post and Comment Options" at the bottom left-hand corner and select the relevant date and time as shown in the screenshot.

If you want to reverse the chronology of the post using scripts, refer to Change order of Blogger posts

Note: Changing the date and time of the post will alter the url of the individual post page (permalink). So if you have any inbound links to that post, these links will be broken.

Update 1 April 2012: For the updated Blogger post editor, this option is now in the right sidebar of the post editor. You will have to click POST SETTINGS at the right sidebar, then click SCHEDULE (see screen shot below):

How to contact Blogger Support

Update 21 November 2010: It is no longer possible to contact Blogger Support. Google have resorted to creating Help Forums with voluntary contributions from users of their products including Blogger to provide support to other users. The Help Forums are frequented by Google Employees but most of the questions are answered by more experienced users with occasional input from Google Employees. Update 30 March 2008: This should have come earlier, but so short of time. Now you can only contact Blogger support for account and TOS (Terms of Service) issues via Blogger Support Contact Form. If you are not already signed into Blogger, you may have to sign in before you get to the Contact form.. All other requests for support should be directed to Google Blogger Help group. I am also providing support at Blogger General Discussions. Note also the email address given below cannot be used anymore. However, if you have a suggestion, you can try Blogger Wishlist.

Update 21 October 2007: Blogger keeps changing the way they can be contacted and I have given up updating this post. If you want, just try your luck. I couldn't get through just as another blogger (see latest comment) but there was another comment where a blogger said he got a reply but his problem still not solved. Wish I remember which post it was made as I would like to ask him how he got through. BTW a Blogger representative says Blogger support do read the messages but will not reply unless they want further information.

Update 23 October 2006: Recently, Blogger has made it very difficult to contact Blogger support. The links to the contact form have now lead to a new page. Will update if I have any further information. In the meantime, you are encouraged to use the Help files and the Google Blogger Help group.

Blogger support makes their contact form or email difficult to find as they want support seekers to first use their HELP section. You should also try searching through, or posting your problem to the Google Blogger Help group: Blogger Help Google group. Look also into Blogger Buzz and Blogger Status to make sure it is not a known issue that can be solved on your own. If it is anything connected to Blogger Beta, look into Known Issues in Blogger Beta.

When you have done that, and you can't solve your problem, or it is not a known problem, then go to Blogger "Talk to us"
and submit your problem there.

You may also try to email support@blogger.com You will very rarely get a human response. Expect an automated email response. Reply to this email. We have got human responses this way.

Another quick way to do a table

It is difficult to do tables with Blogger as browsers count more than 1 space as a single space, as mentioned in my previous post "how to do a quick and dirty table". If you don't want to use the <table> tag, and you don't want to use the "how to do a quick and dirty table" tip, you may want to use Excel to do your table if you have it. Enter the data into the Excel spreadsheet. Format it the way you want your table to appear. Highlight the data of the table and copy into clipboard, log into Dashboard, select the relevant blog, create a post, put the cursor where you want the table to be, right-click, paste. Viola, your table will be inserted and formatted the way you want it to be. Below is a table done using this method:

How to change the blog Header and the description

Many readers and participants of forums asked for ways to do the above. I though a post about it will make answering such queries easier.

To change the blog header/title, and to add or change the description, sign into Dashboard. Select the blog, click SETTINGS and by default you will be in the BASIC sub-tab. There you will see the field for the Title and the Description. Edit or add in the title or description you want.

To make it clearer, I will add in a screenshot later. My own computer is in the workshop now and this computer doesn't have the program for me to create the screenshot .

How to put a new paragraph in the sidebar


To customize templates, it is good to learn HTML. (If you want to learn about html, go to W3 School for some very good html tutorials.)

To add in a new paragraph with a title in the sidebar, you will first access the template editor. See post How to add stuff to the sidebar (click "BACK" button to get back to this page).

Just type in any text in suitable places of the template, using Blogger template tutorial: Adding stuff via the template (close new window to get back to this page).

If you want to have a title to your paragraph, you will have to use HTML. Just copy the example in the screenshot above. If you don't want to go through the hassle, highlight all the text in the box below (click and drag your mouse or click inside the box and press ctrl+A), right-click on your mouse and select "copy" and paste it in the appropriate place in the template. This post Blogger template tutorial: adding stuff via the template (close new window to get back to this page) will guide you as to which part of the template to paste according to where you want the stuff to be in. Then change the heading and the stuff you want to add between the <p> and </a>. To add stuff in the sidebar, place what you want to add after <div id="sidebar"><div id="sidebar2"> in the template. To put a new paragraph, type in those codes.

You may be wondering where in the template you should type in the codes. If you want the paragraph to appear just below the profile, then just follow the screenshot at the top left corner of this post. PS. You have to do this in the post editor. To access the post editor, sign into Dashboard, select the blog, click the TEMPLATE tab, and the post editor will open.

For ads after each post, where to paste the codes?

Update 8 April 2008: Please note that this post was written before the New xml Blogger template was introduced. It can however be still applicable if you are still using the old classic Blogger template.

If you want the AdSense ads to appear after each posts, paste the codes after the <$BlogItemBody$> as shown in the screenshot above.

Update: AdSense TOS place a maximum of 3 ad units on any page. Strictly, if you have more than 3 posts on the main page, that theoretically will place more than 3 ad units on the main page. I have more than 3 posts for this blog, and I have pasted the AdSense script such that the ad unit get displayed at the top of every page. In fact, I also am supposed to have a Wide Skyscraper ad unit in the sidebar. However, AdSense detect that and do not display the extra ad units. The ad unit in the sidebar will only be displayed when one go to the individual post page (permalink), in which case, only 2 ad units will be displayed, one above that post, and one in the sidebar.

After reading the number of publishers who have their account suspended, I decided to be extra careful. To make sure, I contacted AdSense Help regarding the matter, and the reply was that it is OK for this particular blog. Whether this means we have to get clearance for every blogs that have this feature or not, I do not know. I think I will contact AdSense Help once more to make sure. Sure don't want to have my account suspended. You can leave things as it is and take the chance (or contact AdSense Help Center AdSense Help Center or just take the chance. Or you can ensure you comply with the TOS by adjusting the number of pages that get displayed on your main page, for example, if you only have ads in the post, adjust that to display only 3 pages in the main page).

UPDATE: I have been reading numerous reports of AdSense account holders having their account suspended, often without the exact reason for the suspension being given. I have contacted AdSense Help once more for a more definitive answer but the answer were vague, just referring to the fact that one should have a maximum of 3 ad units on each page. As such, I have decided to stop using this for my site, and instead of putting ads in each post, I have put the leaderboard ad unit just below the header. Better to be safe than be sorry.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Another AdSense Publisher, Sherry, did her ads exactly as described in this post, and contacted AdSense Help Center for clearance. Her blog is here: AdSense and Affiliates. She got this reply:

Where to paste the AdSense codes?

Update: This is an old post but is still applicable to those using the old classic Blogger template. Those using the New xml Blogger template should use the HTML/Javascript gadget (Page Element)

Where to paste the AdSense codes? This will depend on where you want the ads on your site. Probably the most prominent place to place it will be just below the header, like on this site. If so:
1. log into Dashboard
2. click the TEMPLATE tab
3. look for the codes you see above and paste the codes where you see Paste AdSense codes here

How to add AdSense to your blog

First, you must have an AdSense account. If you don't have one, apply to join the program. There are bloggers who have got approved AdSense accounts and they may put referral buttons on their blogs, and you can apply for an account via the referral buttons on their blogs. One of the blog is AdSense Alert (close new window to get back to this page), which also have more details about the AdSense program. This blog itself is another site. You will first need a site with reasonable content for them to review. The easiest way to get a site is to start a blog. A friend of mine got his application approved with a blog with just one post. There are various ways to earn through AdSense and they are described in this post: How do I earn from Google AdSense (close new window to get back to this page). You must then generate the scripts for the ads, referral buttons or searchbar. This post describe the way to generate scripts for them: Generating scripts for your AdSense ads, referral buttons and searchbars (close new window to get back to this page).

Then you will have to add the scripts in the appropriate places in the template depending on where you want them displayed. For Blogger classic templates, see for example these posts:

How to redirect from old url to new url

Update 2: This post is not meant for custom domain. This is my comment to JC's comment on redirecting to a custom domain: "JC I am guessing from what you posted that you are asking Blogger to redirect a blogspot blog to a domain you have already purchased. This post is for those who have a website (which can be a blogspot URL) which the blogger do not want to change to custom domain or delete the blog, to another website (which may be another blogspot blog or any website."


You want to use a new url for your blog. Your site have been indexed and have many incoming links. You want to keep you original blogspot.com url but want viewers to be automatically redirected to another website with the url http://newurl.com? This is how you do it. Paste this code (Note: whenever you want to make any changes to the template, it is always wise to backup the template first. If you are not familiar with that, refer to this post: Backing up and changing your Blogger template.

Update 12 May 2007: I have tested the above method and also other methods using Javascript, but all of them resulted in a 404 error (Page not found). I think blogspot blogs are very prone to hijacking by spammers who do a redirect to their own sites. I think this has come to the notice of Blogger and probably they have done something that makes the method not work anymore.

The HTML for a link list for you to edit as shown below is present in most of the standard Blogger templates (click on the screenshot to enlarge it:

To create links that in your sidebar to actually lead to sites you want, you will have to edit the HTML already in the template. Log into Dashboard, select the relevant blog, click TEMPLATE tab and look for the codes you see above. Look for the block of codes after
<h2 class="sidebar-title">Links</h2>

Edit the link list so that it become something like this

Replace the http://news.google.com/ with your actual link, and description with what you want to be seen in the displayed link. For example, I may edit
<li><a href="http://news.google.com/">Google News</a></li>
to
<li><a href="http:blogger-tricks.blogspot.com/">Blogger Tips and Tricks</a></li>
If you do that, what will be displayed will be what you see below:

    Edit the other links. If you want more links, you can always copy and paste the links and edit them to what you want.

    Update: 2 readers and a commentor in this post had problem with editing the link list because they couldn't find the part of the template where it occurs. A screenshot helped them. Follow this link to see the screenshot: Part of the Minima template where the link list is

    Update 2: I just realised that while the link list you are supposed to edit are present in nearly all the standard Blogger templates, some (like the Sand Dollar and Scribe template I think) doesn't have them. Check for this in the sidebar of your blog.

    If you can see that, that means this HTML for the link list for you to edit exist in your template. If it is absent, then you will have to make your own link list or copy paste this HTML into your template:

    into the appropriate part of your template and edit it according. You can refer to his post Adding content to your blog via the template as a guide as to which part of the template you should add the HTML. The post shows text as an example, but it can be HTML, scripts for ads, hit counters, etc.

    Note: Following the instruction above will result in your link list displayed in the main page and also in the archives. If you want the link list to appear in all pages, remove the <MainOrArchivePage> and </MainOrArchivePage> tags from the HTML.

    Update: Note that this post was published before New Blogger was introduced, and this post is only relevant for those using the old classic template (even if your account have been upgraded to the New Blogger account). If you are using the New Blogger template, the normal way to add a link list is to click TEMPLATE tab which will take you to the LAYOUT. You will then click "Add a Page Element" in the appropriate section and select "Link List". For more detailed instructions, refer to How to add link list in New Blogger. However, most of the link list in my blogs are added using HTML similar to this. I have saved the HTML in a Notepad file and each time I have a new blog and want to add the link list, I just click on "Add a Page Element" like above, but this time select HTML/Javascript. The HTML I used I will put in a scroll box below:

    How to do a quick and dirty table

    Here is a way to do a quick and dirty table if you don't want to use the <table> tag. If you try to enter a table like this in Blogger:

    browsers will count extra spaces as one space and display the table as follows:

    To display the table as formatted with the spaces, you can use the Preformatted tag <pre> insteaded. What you have to do is to add the tags <pre> and </pre> before and after the table, like this:

    How do I track visitors to my blog

    UPDATE 19 August 2008: This post was prepared before the introduction of New Blogger and is meant for those using old classic Blogger template. For New Blogger xml template, please refer to adding advertisements and hit counter to New Blogger blog.

    Many bloggers are interested in knowing how often their blog was viewed. What you need is a hits counter. You can get a free hit counter here at StatCounter.com. After you sign up for an account, you will be taken through a series of steps to generate codes to paste into your template. You will have to provide a title and give the url of your blog, choose a category and select from a series of options. You may just accept the default if you want a counter similar to what you see at the bottom of this page (you may also select the invisible option). There will be just one option where no default is given and that is whether your website uses frames. Select NO. There is a further option of whether you want the script generated for your counter to be XHTML compliant or not. For the New Blogger, I have earlier found that leaving this unticked can give a working counter. But if you are using a New Blogger template, it is probably betting to tick that option. When the codes are generated, highlight it and copy the codes.

    Sign into Dashboard, select the relevant blog, click the TEMPLATE tab to get to the template editor to edit the template. Paste the codes after the <body> tag and before the </body> tag. If you chose an invisible counter, you can follow the instruction in the post exactly, and it doesn't matter whether you are using the old classic template or the New Blogger template. If you chose a visible counter, the counter will appear at the bottom of the page.     If you chose an invisible counter, the number of steps is very much less. Note that Statcounter have changed a bit since this post was written and I think I need to do an update/redit or a new post,

    How to delete photo

    To delete photo, you will have to remove the relevant html code that has the tag that look something like this: <img src="photo.jpg"> while in the Edit Html mode. An easier way is to do it in the Compose mode.
    1. sign into Dashboard
    2. select relevant blog
    3. select relevant post
    4. click EDIT tab
    5. click COMPOSE tab
    6. click photo
    7. press DELETE key on your keyboard.

    The above only stop Blogger from displaying the photo. If you want the photo to be completely deleted, you will have to sign into Picasa Web Album and delete it there.

    How to make a clickable link

    There are more than one way to make a clickable link (hyperlink). One way is to write a HTML tag yourself in the EDIT HTML mode. When you do this, you will have a choice of making the link open in the same window or in a new window

    Making a hyperlink open in the same window

    To write a hyperlink which open in the same window, the HTML tag is of the form <a href="URL of target site">Description</a> Replace Description with a description of the target site. That description is referred to as an Anchor text and is important if you are linking to other part of your own site as this Anchor text will let the search engines know what that post is all about and will make it easier for people searching for topics contained in that post. It is also what people will see in your site. For example this HTML tag <a href="http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com">Blogger Tips and Tricks</a> will be seen as Blogger Tips and Tricks.

    The "Description" is what people call the anchor text and to read about the importance of anchor text, go to Importance of anchor text in hyperlinks. In shout, don't ever put the anchor text (Description) as "here" if possible.

    URL is short for Uniform Resource Locator, and is the "address" of the site you want to link to. It can be copied from the address bar at the top of the page. If you are not familiar with URL, refer to What is URL and how to get it

    Making a hyperlink open in a new window

    To make a link open in a new window, you will have to write the HTML in this form: <a href="URL of target site" target="_blank">Anchor Text</a> or <a href="URL of target site" target="new">Anchor Text</a>

    Using the hyperlink icon to make a clickable link



    If you want to make a link to another part of the web or to another post in your blog, and you don't want to mess with HTML, the easiest is to use the LINK icon Google Blogger link icon in the post editor tool bar. For example, to link to Natural Remedies, first highlight the text as shown in the screenshot above, then click the LINK Google Blogger link icon tool. A pop-up box will appear for you to enter the url of the target site. If you don't even want to type the url, you can go to the target site, copy from the address bar and paste into the pop-up box, then click OK. This will be best done with a browser with tabbed browsing like FireFox. Then you can be in the post editor page of Blogger in one tab and the site you want to link to in another tab, all in the same window, and you can easily go from one tab to another by clicking on the tab which will give information about what is in that tab.

    The link HTML tag will automatically be written for you. The link will open in the same window, and you will not have the choice of making the link open in a new window. You also will not have what they call a tool tip which appear when you hover your mouse over the link and which will give information about the site you are linking to. Refer to the relevant section if you want that.

    To make the link you made using the link Google Blogger link icon icon open in a new window, change to EDIT HTML mode if you are in the compose mode, look for the HTML for the link you made, and add the target="_blank" or target="new" attribute to link HTML, for example,

    <a href="http://foodasmedicine.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Natural Remedies</a> or

    <a href="http://foodasmedicine.blogspot.com/" target="new">Natural Remedies</a>

    Note that these ways of making links open in new windows has been deprecated but will still be supported for quite some time. There are people using Javascript to get around this, but Javascript are not allowed in Blogger post and if I have time, I will try to find out how this can be done.

    Make tool tip appear for hyperlinks

    Some people like to give even more information about a link beyond what is given in the anchor text, and for that, you can add a title="" attribute. Then when a visitor hover his mouse over the link, a tool tip will appear which will give whatever extra information you want to give to the visitor. For example, this link HTML

    <a href="http://bloggerfordummies.blogspot.com" title="on online book (in progress) for Blogger beginners written with no assumption of any prior knowledge">Dummies Guide to Google Blogger</a>

    Will display the link Dummies Guide to Google Blogger. Try hovering your mouse over the link and observe (looks like there is a limit of how much information you can put in the title attribute because in Firefox 2.0, the information I put in was truncated in the tool tip. I checked in different browsers and in Flock, it was also truncated, but in Internet Explorer 7 and Opera, the information was displayed in full. Thus if you are interested in how visitors using different browsers, it is a big advantage to have many browsers in your computer. There are lots of other advantages as well. See Why you should be using more than one browser). It does your computer no harm to have more than one browsers in your computer.

    Why no line spaces?


    Question: " When we are in the compose mode, we double space between paragraphs. It looks fine. When we go to the preview mode, there are no space between the paragraphs - everything is smashed together. What is happening?"

    Answer: Your setting for "Convert Line Breaks" must have been set to NO. Sign into Dashboard, select blog, click SETTING, then FORMATTING, somewhere in the middle of the page, set "Convert Line Breaks" to Yes. (See screenshot)

    You may also force a line break. Prepare your post in EDIT HTML mode. Where you want the line break, type <br />

    You can type as many <br /> as you want line breaks.
