Blogger Beta: How to add a link list.

It is now very easy to add a link list to a Blogger beta blog. Just sign into Dashboard, in the relevant blog, click LAYOUT and you will be taken to the Layout page, where you will see "Add a page Element" in the sidebar section. Click on the "Add a Page Element" (See screenshot below. Click to enlarger):
Blogger beta Layout
After you click on "Add a Page Element, a pop-up will appear where you will be given a few choices of what you want to add. In the "Link List" choice, click "Add to blog" and the pop-up for configuring the link list is displayed (see screenshot. Click to enlarge):
Blogger Beta: Configure Link List
There are four fields for you to add and 1 drop-down menu. Fill in the title, for example, Blogger Resources. It is best to leave the "no of links to show in link list" blank so you don't have to worry about how many links you can add (no maximum). Add in the site URL and then fill in the site name (title or description). Then click "ADD LINK". The site name/title/description should appear below the "New Site Name" field. If you have somemore links to add, repeat the process untill you have all the links added.

When you are done, click "Save changes" and when it is successfully added, a new page element will be added to your Layout, normally at the top of the widget/page element list in the sidebar. If that is where you want it, then you are done. If not, drag and drop the new page element to where you want it, and press "Save".

Well I hate to tell you but this doesn't work. I've tried 19 times in the last 3 days to add links to my site and it always tells me changes can't be saved, try again later. Here's my blog, I'd really appreciate any help you can give me. http://mermaidshaven.blogspot.com/

    Thanks

  2. Well,

You seem to be using a Blogger Beta template, as I saw one label at the bottom of one of your post. Have you succeeded in getting to the stage of adding the link list, but only could not save?

If so, then perhaps it is a temporary Blogger glitch, or perhaps Blogger support need to know about it.

Would it be possible to make the links open in a new window? I don't want readers (or myself) to get away from my blog while trying a link.

  4. I think someone did a hack for that, but not sure. However, you can do a link list by adding a HTML/Javascripts to the sidebar and write the hyperlinks manually, for example

(darn, too many HTML characters not accepted by comment, but you will write the HTML exactly as you would in Blogger classic, except now you are adding it via a widget.

  6. I am really 'challenged' Peter. I read your reply about opening links in a new window but I am still clueless what you mean Peter :o( . Do you have screen shots somewhere showing how to do this and click by click instructions? I need the K.I.S.S. [Keep It Simple for the Silly] approach, >G<.
    Thanks bunches for your Blog.

  11. To make a clickable picture/button in the sidebar, refer to this post How to add a clickable picture in the New Blogger (formerly beta) blog sidebar.

For a link back, just make another clickable button back to your original blog.

  12. Hi Peter - I have a link bar already set in the template, 'Shush' which I recently downloaded from eBlog. I have the Configure List open, and am confused. What URL must I put in? My own? What I want to do is to be able to allow visitors to go to earlier postings, my archives, about me, etc., does this link do that? In other words I want to point to different sections of my blog without having to scroll through masses of stuff to get there. Is what you're describing showing the ability to do so. Please, can you help me?

  13. "link bar" You mean link list?

You can put whatever URL for any website you want and then put whatever anchor text you want, but regarding archives etc, you can add via the LAYOUT and Archive gadget.

  15. Suddenly my "Configure Link List" will not save any edits/changes. I get an error that states "Please correct the errors on this form" - but there aren't any errors. This link list has worked for quite a while, it's been in place for some time & I edit it a couple of times a month. But tonight it simply gives the "correct the error" message. Any suggestions?

  16. I can only suggest using a different browser or clearing cache and cookies and try again. You didn't get any bX-.... error message?
