Introduction to del.icio.us

In an earlier post "How to do categories" a simple method was described using del.icio.us as a workaround for doing categories for Blogger. However, a reader has indicated that she is not familiar with del.icio.us tagging system. That is the reason for this post.

Del.icio.us is a popular online public bookmarking system that is now owned by Yahoo and is a big improvement over the conventional bookmarking system. In the conventional bookmarking system, the bookmarks are stored in individual computers. This means that when you are away from the computer, the bookmarks are not available. Also, when the bookmarks become too numerous, they become difficult to find.

The advantage of Del.icio.us bookmarking system is that the bookmarks are available wherever you have access to the Internet. You can also organize bookmarks through tags (words that describe an item saved on del.icio.us), which make them easy to find later, you can see which are the sites popularly tagged by others, or find related sites tagged by others. For example, you have an interest in astronomy, you do a search for astronomy, and there you will find a tag for astronomy. You click on the astronomy tag, and you will see all the sites which had been tagged with the tag astronomy on the page.

Del.icio.us is a wonderful resource I would recommend to anyone. To sign up for Del.icio.us go to http://del.icio.us/ and choose your user name and password. After you register, you will be taken to a page where you can install an extension for Firefox as shown in screenshot. (If you are still using only Internet Explorer, I would highly recommend you to switch to Firefox as it is a better and more secure browser. To read why you should have Firefox, and also to download Firefox with the Google toolbar, go to Firefox Alert. After you install the Firefox extension, you will see 2 buttons on the toolbar - "My del.icio.us" button and the "Tag this" button. This is very convenient. When you click on the My del.icio.us button, you will be taken to a page where all your tagged sites are displayed. When you want to tag a site, all you have to do is to surf to the site, then click the "Tag this" button and a pop-up will appear (see second screenshot). Here you will enter the name of the tags for the site (you can name one or more than one tags). You can also select the recommended tags shown below. In the screenshot (click on image to enlarge it), I have selected the tags blogger and tools for the site. You may also jot notes in the 3rd box (not compulsory). When you are satisfied, you click SAVE and it is done. When you click the My del.icio.us button you will now see the tagged site displayed. See http://del.icio.us/dummies. Also, on the top right hand corner, you will see all the tags you have use. The tags I have used for an account I set up for this blog are Introduction, Basic, General, Blogger_specific, Popular_or_useful, AdSense and Increase Traffic. If I click on General, I will see all the sites I have tagged with the tag General. This property can be used to do categories for Blogger.

Blogger has no provision for doing categories. Del.icio.us has been widely used as a workaround to make categories for Blogger. To see a simple method which this blog used, go to "How to do categories".

So if I've got this right, you can also use del.icio.us as a promotional tool by bookmarking your own sites and then each post on those sites?

  2. When you bookmark your own pages, it is also viewable by those using del.icio.us. And if it is bookmarked by many others, it will appear at the top of the pages for popular bookmarks.

  3. Hello,
You have a very informative blog, especially for a newbie like me. I would to like to link to your blog but I don't know how. Could you give me some instructions thanks?

  4. Thanks for offering to link to this blog. Unfortunately, the comments section doesn't allow HTML so doesn't allow me to post the way to add links. However you can click the Edit Me in the sidebar of your blog Work at Home Affliate and follow the instructions there.

  5. Argh! I've been trying and trying for 3 hours now to get this, but no luck! I registered with del.icio.us, have the two icons on my firefox toolbar or whatever it's called, and am trying to add tags from my blog...but for some reason I just can't get it. Either del.icio puts in entirely different tags names, or doesn't include them at all. I followed your advice and right-clicked on my posts in my 'edit posts' option under template...but I must be missing something. I tag 10 posts under "Short Stories" in the toolbar that comes up, and later in del.icio there is one tag under short and another under story...

Also, I don't get where to paste the URL. I looked for the spot you suggested (member profile...) but it's nowhere to be found in my html.

As you can maybe tell, I'm an amateur, but geez, I'm about to pull what little hair I have out!

All I want are categories in my sidebar, is that too much to ask for? I'm willing to put work into it, but this seems a bit of a dead end.

    help?

  6. Hi Elan,

Don't know if you are referring to tags comprising 2 words. For del.icio.us tags, you have to join them up with hyphen - or underscore _

This was written for the old classic template. Are you still using that or have you already migrated to the New Blogger template? If you have already migrated, Label List (Categories) is built in and you can easily add it in: Adding advertisement, hit counter, etc in New Blogger. Advertisement, etc, are mention, but you will find that there is a choice of adding a Label list (which is the same as Categories) and it is done automatically. Labels (categories) are added as you add them to your post. Even if you want a tag cloud like one you can get with del.icio.us as described in this post Categories: An easy method, there is a hack for it for the New Blogger. Refer to phydeaux3 label cloud hack.

  7. wicked Peter. Now I know why it wasn't working, I'm on new blogger and the html code you gave me was different than the classic template. I took your advice re: comment management, thanks...and I put in my labels, and it looks a lot better now.

thanks for your prompt reply. if there's something I can do to promote your services, do let me know.

  10. Hi Elan,

"let me know if there's anything i can do to promote your services!"

Yes, if it is not too much trouble. Digg those posts in my New Blogger Blogger Tips and Tricks etc which you find useful. The Digg button is at the top right of the post. And bookmark my blog and post/s in del.icio.us etc. They help in Blogsearch.

  11. Hi Peter, your blog has so much information that is very useful! I just started my blog and as I am not very blog savy i am having some troubles. I am trying to add categories to my blog such as fashion diys, home diys and so on. When I post a blog about a certain subject I would also like to be able to categorize it as well.

I read your post about categories "the easy method" and well its not so easy for me. I am totally confused and stuck. If there is any way possible for you to break down the process for me I would SO much appreciate it. I need simple as simple can be in order to understand.

    Thank you so much!

  12. Blogger has improved by leaps and bounds and now Delicious is no longer needed to create categories (they call it labels). All you need to do is label each post (you can have more than 1 by separating with a comma) then go to DESIGN (previously called Layout) and add a label widget. If you think you still need a post for that, let me know.
