Blogger template tutorial Part 2

Update: I see from statcounter that people searching for Blogger beta (now New Blogger) are landing on this site. For those who want to add stuff to their sidebars, etc., looking for 3 column templates, etc., but using the New Blogger templates, please visit

Blogger template tutorial: Adding stuff via the template

You can customize your blog by editing the template or adding stuff like texts, hyperlinks, images, etc. to the template. Where in the webpage they will be displayed will depend on which part of the template you add the stuff in. The most common place to add stuff is the sidebar. For this, you will have to add the stuff in between the tags

As an example, let's say you want the stuff to appear before the profile section. You will then add the stuff just before the <$BlogMemberProfile$> tag. The rest, I think, is self explanatory in the screenshot.

If Blogger store of templates does not satisfy your appetite, and you want something more than some personal customization, you can always download ready-made templates. There are a number of free Blogger templates available online. Here is a listing, by no means complete:

  1. Thanks for doing this blog.

I have an unrelated question - would love to put an audio file (a play button, basically) into a blog on my site. I have the file in iTunes (and own the CD, btw if that matters), and have no idea how to make it happen.

I've figured out photos but not audio files or video files.

Could you please do a post on that?

    Thanks much.

I often try typing bits or modifying widths bit by bit, but I have just seen one thingy here I'm going to use ;-D

  5. I see your Posted By in the source code; it looks quite accessible to me. Must be something I don't know or that you already fixed, since I don't recall what was there before. Or did you mean to get rid of the clock?

  6. can you help me - my email is minnick82@aol.com. My blog is www.thefollowspot.blogspot.com and it is publishing weird. The bogs do not start posting until the end of the sidebar. You have to scrill down to see the new posts and I do not know how to fix it. I appreciate any help you could give me.

    ReplyDelete
  7. See Sidebar pushed to the bottom of the page. One thing you can try. Try saving the post "Presenting...the Follow Spot Movie" as a draf and see if that helps.

  8. Peter, change the

    http://www.ehsany.tk

    to http://www.ehsany.com/

...otherwise you're sending people on a .tk trip -the ads, the waiting- and then the announcement they're on .com now!

And, in fact, the .com is not loading to me today. :(

  10. i have a couple of questions for you. when I switch over to the 3 column template my banner no longer became center. check this out www.amymaher.blogspot.com. Can you tell me how to fix it?

Also on your blog under the banner you have 4 links. How can I do that?

    thanks

  12. Peter, thx for the advice on my blog, it's fixed now.
Any help/advice on a guest map?
Can you believe I still don't have one.
Where and how do I put it in my template??
    Thanks.

  13. Glad your problem is solved. As for the guest map, I haven't found the need to install one yet, but there should be a number which you can find by doing a search. Select a suitable one, get the codes, paste it into a template. Where in the template will depend on where on the page you want the map to be. I'll probably be doing a post on where to paste codes at the new blog Blogger Tips and Tricks.

  15. If you don't want your blog to be indexed, you will have to put a metatag into the head section of your template. See HTML Author's Guide to the Robots META tag. The one to use is the one containing meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow"

    ReplyDelete
  16. but the thing is i deleted my blog already

and now due to personal reasons i am required to remove the link from google search

how do i put in a robot.txt if i dont have a blog to put it in?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Then whatever is in the Google search will be cached copies, and there is nothing we can do about it but to wait.

    ReplyDelete
  18. but all i want to do is get rid of the link in google search

    just that specific link

    ReplyDelete
  19. peter pls help!
this is a very urgent matter!
    pls! i beg you

    ReplyDelete
  20. I would if I can, but I believe what goes into the cache depends totally on the search engines. So unless there is a way to contact the people managing the search engine, I think there is nothing we can do. You can try reposting you help request to relevant help group and see if others have a different perspective.

I know I should not complain about a free offer, but...

  38. They have what they call labels in the new Blogger Beta, but they are having a lot of problems at the moment. In the meantime, why don't you use the methods outlined in Categories - Simple Method and Categories - Easy Method. I find them easy to do and good enough for me.

I have an unrelated question: does blogger support meta tags for keywords? If so should I consider doing it to increase visibility of my blog in SE's?

  40. Thank you.

Have you any thoughts on mata tags for keywordds in blogger?

    Regards
    Peter

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yes it does. All you have to do is to add it between th <head> and </head> tags in the template. But I hear most people say that search engines ignore it now becausse of abuses.

  42. Thank you HEAP! for this Blog :o)

I was tearing my hair out trying to work out how to add code to the template, more importantly where to add it, all of which proved fruitless.

I am totally clueless and "code challenged", however your Blog has been a wealth of information for the not-so-code-savvy such as I.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I really appreciate the simple and easy steps and screen shots. They are so way helpful.

    instead of http://www.abc.com/xxx/xxx.html

    Thank you.

  47. Hi Nicolai,

First, I am a Chinese using only the Christian name for privacy sake, and a non-native English speaker, and may not have understood completely your question. In any case, I have been using the Minima templates for all my blogs and am not too familiar with the Rounders template. I would suggest you try posting this question to the Blogger Help group.

I keep running in to the same problem. I go to download a template and paste the code into my edit template html box. I keep getting errors like: "XML error message: The content of elements must consist of well-formed character data or markup." So I still haven't been able to change anything. I know I'm doing something wrong, anyway you can help?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sounds like you are using a new Blogger (formerly beta) setup.

    1. Where did you get the template from?

    2. Is the template designed to work with new Blogger (formerly beta)?

    3. Are you copying it from Notepad into the template?

    Thanks for the reply btw...

The template was from this site (although I've used others from different sites with no luck)

    http://www.bloggertalk.net/blog_templates_details12.html

And I am now assuming that it was not designed to work with the new blogger. If that's the case can you send me on my way to find ones that are? That'd be great...

And yes, I'm just copying it from the notepad and pasting it in.

    ReplyDelete
  51. There are only 2 templates for Blogger beta from this site - Ramani's and Christine's

I you use this, and copying it into notepad, make sure the word wrap is off. It is easier to download as xml file then upload it to the template, rather than copy-pasting.

  54. Hi Peter.

I am trying to follow the advice you point out at HTML Authors' Guide about adding a robots meta tag.

When I try to add the following text after the head tag:

    meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow"

I get the following error message:

Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.
XML error message: The element type "meta" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "".

I am using the correct brackets for this code. I haven't included them here so my message would show up properly as a comment.

    Thanks for your help,

    C

  55. Hi Clive,

I think you have tried adding < to the meta tag
    <meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow">
but couldn't get the comment system to accept it. You should have a look at How to post special characters.

I haven't tried adding the above meta tag in my blog, so I don't know if this would work, but try changing the above to

    <meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow" />

and see if it gets accepted.

  56. HiYah!

Is there any simple way of using Blogger to write a book?

I have a blog and have posted an introduction but when I post Chapter 1 it, of course, replaces the intro (as it is now the latest post). It follows that the book chapters will read in reverse order, which ain't the usual way to read a book.

So, the question is - how can I order the posts/chapters so that they read in the correct order?

I'm not too good with code but willing to give it a try if not too difficult.

    Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Don't know if you will view this as good or bad news but the only way you can arrange your posts in chronological order is to play with dates and time
